Amelia for Windows

Amelia for Windows is mostly self-documenting. The menus are logically hierarchical, with one main menu (appearing at the right), six submenus (one of which appears at the center/left), and a message screen (at the bottom). The main menu indicates by highlighting which of the submenus are active and enables you to switch among them. Cursor movement is by the arrows, tab, page up, and page down keys. Press enter to make a selection.

For the most part, all you do is fill in the names of the input and output files, change any options you desire, and hit the run button. For example:

  1. The program opens with the cursor on the Name of Input File blank. Type in the complete name of the input file, including path and extension, and hit return. A list of supported file types is given in the message window at the bottom of the screen (see the FAQ for details). For example, enter sample.asc, the space-delimited ascii sample file included with the distribution. If the file loads correctly, the indicator [Loaded] will appear to the right.

  2. Press the down arrow key two times to move to the Name of Output File blank. Type the file name for the imputed output files, and hit return. After the final slash, the filename should have at most 6 characters, and no extension. The extension will be chosen by the program to match the output file type, which defaults to text (.txt). For the purposes of this example, type sample and hit return.

  3. Hit the Page Down key once to get to the next screen, which is the first of two option screens. Use the arrow keys to go to the AMempri option. This option controls the prior used in imputation. Hit enter, type in a new value, and hit enter to change the value. If valid, the new number will show up in front of the Old Value tag. E.g., enter: 5. (Other options could be chosen too of course.)

  4. Hit the Page Down key twice to get to the Run menu. The cursor is on the Run button. Hit enter, and the program will produce 5 new datasets called sample1.txt,...,sample5.txt and a log file called sample.log. To look at this log file, use the down arrow to go to the next button, and hit enter.

  5. Hit the Page Down key to get to the exit menu. The Yes button will be illuminated. Hit enter, and the program will exit.
