History

We wrote JudgeIt for our own research, some ongoing and some published in the articles listed in the references at the end of this manual. As the dates on these articles document, some of the code in JudgeIt dates back many years, and we have shared this code with a variety of researchers. As a response to the many requests we received for an easier way to implement our methods, we formally released version 1.00 of JudgeIt early in 1992. We subsequently received and responded to hundreds of requests for the program from individual scholars. JudgeIt has also been used during the recent redistricting process in roughly half the U.S. states by or on behalf of the federal courts, Democrats, Republicans, third parties, nonpartisan organizations, minority groups, members of congress, state legislators, the U.S. Justice Department, other government officials, and private citizens. JudgeIt also won the American Political Science Association's Research Software Award for 1992.
