Installation

Follow these steps to install JudgeIt:

  1. Create a directory on your hard disk for the JudgeIt program. We suggest: C:$ \backslash$JUDGEIT
  2. Copy the file J***.EXE (where you should replace *** with the current version number) to your program directory. (This is a self-extracting archive file containing the JudgeIt program files.)
  3. Log onto this new directory (c:, cd $ \backslash$judgeit) and, from the DOS prompt, type: J*** (This will extract individual JudgeIt files. If it does not work, then you may have gotten JudgeIt via anonymous FTP without setting the BINARY option.)
  4. From the DOS prompt, type: EXAMPLES and press return. (This command will create a subdirectory off of your main JudgeIt directory called examples. It will also move the examples files (*.it, *.asc, and *.cmd) there and create gauss datasets (*.D?T).)
  5. If you created a directory called anything other than C:$ \backslash$JUDGEIT, edit JUDGEIT.BAT and change the 7th line to your new directory. (The seventh line of JUDGEIT.BAT now reads SET JUDGEITTMP=C:$ \backslash$JUDGEIT; if you are instead using subdirectory d:$ \backslash$progs$ \backslash$judgeit, for example, then change this line to SET JUDGEITTMP=D:$ \backslash$progs$ \backslash$JUDGEIT)
  6. If you intend to use any of the graphics commands, you should edit the file PQGRUN.CFG, which comes with JudgeIt. This self-documenting file enables you to specify your monitor type, the printer or plotter you wish to use, the file names and methods of converting graphics output to other formats, and various characteristics of the output.
  7. If you do not have printed documentation, use LaTeX to print the file JudgeIt.TeX, which is in your examples subdirectory.

For most computer systems and most datasets, JudgeIt will work comfortably in available RAM. However, if you have extremely large datasets or limited RAM, you can engage JudgeIt's virtual memory feature so it can use a portion of your hard disk as additional RAM. To do this, type VMRUNI from DOS for an explanation of this feature. You will need to run this a second time with parameters you choose to turn on the virtual memory feature.

Finally, it is helpful to add C:$ \backslash$JUDGEIT to the path command in your autoexec.bat file. This enables you to keep the program files in one place and your JudgeIt command files and output elsewhere. Alternatively, you can run JudgeIt with the subdirectory name in the command (c: $ \backslash$judgeit$ \backslash$judgeit filename); JudgeIt will find the support files.

To make sure that your installation was successful, type: Judgeit help at the DOS command prompt and press return. You should see a few pages of help screens and be returned to the DOS prompt. If you see the DOS command ``out of environmental space", add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file and reboot your system: SHELL=$ \backslash$COMMAND.COM /P/E:1000

JudgeIt is distributed in one self-extracting file (J***.EXE, where *** refers to the current version number). After extraction, you should have all the files listed in Table 1. If you are missing one or more of these, or if any have been modified since distribution, the program or results may not be reliable. t:filesllllJudgeIt Files Batch file to run JudgeIt & judgeit.bat
