This operator can be used to work on an incumbency variable -- usually coded as $-1$ for Republican Incumbents, 0 for open seats, and 1 for Democratic incumbents -- to produce a variable which has the values $-1$ for Republican incumbents and 0 otherwise. This is useful for commands such as PROB that will give the expected proportion of Republican incumbents likely to win reelection.
